MNZ is made up of a Board of five members appointed by the Governor General on the recommendation of the Minister of Transport. The Board appoints the Director of Maritime New Zealand, who has independent statutory powers under the Maritime Transport Act 1994.

Keith, former Chief Executive and Registrar of the Real Estate Agents Authority, took over the role as Director of MNZ on 5 December 2011. He brings over 20 years experience in the public sector, with extensive leadership experience in a number of senior leadership positions in regulation, compliance and enforcement. Keith is the former Deputy Secretary, Regulation and Compliance at the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) and is an alumni of the Government Advanced Leadership Programme. He currently also leads the whole of government Compliance Common Capability Programme.

David was born in Reefton. In April 2009 he retired from the Royal New Zealand Navy after 42 years service – spending the last 5 years as Chief of Navy. He had a variety of appointments at sea, ashore, in New Zealand and overseas. With his wife Barbara, he divides his time between Wellington and Otaki. David was appointed Chairman in February 2010.
Dave was formerly President of the New Zealand Seafarers Union. Dave served on the Marine Council and the New Zealand Shipping Industry Training Board, and was a member of the Shipping Industry Review Team that made strategic recommendations to the Minister of Transport in 2000. Dave is currently a trustee of the Seafarers Scholarship Trust and the New Zealand representative on the Board of the Pacific Forum Line. Dave became a member of the Authority in July 2001 and was appointed Deputy Chairman in June 2004.
Ken was formerly General Manager and Managing Director of the Port of Napier for over 16 years. Prior to this, Ken was CEO of the New Zealand Ports Authority and had a 20-year career working in a number of government departments. Ken is currently a director of City Medical Limited (Napier) and a trustee of the Napier Family Centre Financial Trust. He recently completed a term as a Director of Unison Networks Ltd and 9 years as Chair of the Hawke’s Bay Power Consumers Trust. Ken became a member of the Authority in June 2003.
Peter has recently been appointed COO at Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec), a Trustee at Digital Porirua Trust, Owner/Director at Quorum Group Ltd and The BDH Group Ltd. Peter has extensive management experience, including CEO at Digital Porirua Trust, General Manager, Science and Engineering Services at BRANZ and General Manager, Network Delivery at Telecom. Prior to these roles Peter held a variety of management, technical and leadership roles within Telecom. Peter specialises in management consultancy and mentoring senior managers and executives. He became a member of the Authority in May 2011.
Michael is a management consultant specialising in assisting clients with major strategic change and performance improvement initiatives. Michael is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand and has over 30 years experience in most business disciplines. This experience has been gained as a Chief Executive in the Australasian transport industry and the New Zealand electricity and health industries. Michael is a Director of Aerocool Ltd, Norfolk Southern Cross Ltd, New Zealand Forest Research Ltd, Te Papa Tipu Investments Ltd, and Davinci Robot Ltd. Michael was appointed to the Authority in November 2006.
